BEST HIP-HOP OPEN MIC
(Detroit - Feb-07) Every Friday night, Java Exchange Café is packed with the city's best slammers, rhymers and spoken word poets alike. The LocMama and Jy-Obadele host this weekly event that "is unlike anything else you'll find in Detroit," according to an RDW voter. The intimate vocal expression one encounters at PicNap is incredibly affecting and the slam competition side of things keeps it fresh and exciting while DJ Andre Royster spins tracks that set and then elevate the atmosphere.
Editor's Note: THANKS YOU REAL DETROIT WEEKLY... and to all our patrons and fans for supporting the EchoVerse Poetry & Slam Series (formerly PicNap-Poetry). It's been an honor providing a forum in Detroit where talent and people can florish in spoken word and music.

Poets Take It From Page To Stage
(Detroit - 06/25/06) Johnny Jenkins walks up to the microphone, his mouth breaking into a sly smile. He's about to recite his poem "Black Butter" in a sultry voice, and by the end, nearly everyone in the audience will be blushing. I reminisce, lost licking lips, moist in morning dew ...The words seem to drip from him. Drenched in warm whispers, I caress echoes left only to channel you.
